Lifesaving Drones: The New Frontier of Medical Rescue

In medical emergencies, every second can make a difference. It is from this awareness that SEAUM (Sanitary Emergency Urban Air Mobility) was born—a cutting-edge experimental project designed and coordinated by the Italian Society 118 System. The goal is ambitious: to reduce intervention times by using specific drones to overcome obstacles that are difficult to bypass by land, such as traffic, traffic lights, and poorly accessible areas.

The Challenge: Ambulance vs. Drone

Recently, in Rosciano (Pescara), a practical simulation of a suspected cardiac arrest allowed for a comparison between traditional transport methods and technological innovation.

While an ambulance from the Pescara 118 Set traveled the 13 km road route, a drone provided by UrbanV—a technical partner of the project along with D-Flight, both of whom are exhibitors at Dronitaly 2026—took off carrying an automated defibrillator along a 9 km aerial route.

Life-saving results

The data emerging from the test are more than satisfying:
Time saved: The drone delivered the device a full 4 minutes earlier than the road vehicle.

Clinical impact: In emergency medicine, speed is everything. It has been estimated that for every minute saved in delivering an electric shock, the patient's chances of survival increase by 10%.

Next Steps of the Project

The journey of SEUAM does not stop in Abruzzo. The next appointment is already set in Calabria, to continue testing the effectiveness of "flying rescue." The potential of this technology is enormous: not only for easing traffic congestion in large urban areas, but above all for ensuring timely interventions in the most inaccessible mountain areas and smaller islands, where traditional connections are often slow or difficult.

Within the framework of the 11th edition of Dronitaly (March 11-13, 2026, Ex GAM - BolognaFiere Congress Center), the themes of healthcare transport and emergency and rescue via drones will be revisited and addressed during the extensive conference program accompanying the exhibition part of the event.

Three days dedicated to exhibitions, conferences, technical tables, and networking, to present the most advanced technologies and foster B2B and B2G relationships aimed at developing new partnerships, projects, and market opportunities.

The ideas and opportunities born during the previous special event at Brasimone in September will be the starting point for this second appointment, which will deepen and develop the main themes of the world of civil drones for professional use and their applications.
